So Sweet, Good Enough to Eat…

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

With the holidays being over, I (and many of you I’m sure) are getting back to normal eating habits. These past few weeks I’ve been indulging in candy canes, cookies, and cakes. Not to mention the other holiday food I’ve been chomping away on.

Eating sweet foods isn’t problematic for some people but it is for me. My whole life I’ve had a huge sweet tooth. Candy, brownies, cookies, ice cream…if it was sweet I’d be eating it. Over this past year though, I was in a bit of an emotional funk and found myself turning to sweet treats constantly. Red Vines were my breakfast and I’d often spoil my appetite for dinner with snack cakes. I didn’t think anything of it until I went to the doctor and I was diagnosed as a borderline diabetic, meaning I was thisclose to developing diabetes if I didn’t adopt better eating and exercise habits right away. I’m 25 and I’d never had any health scares, thankfully. This news frightened me, because it was the first time I realized my careless decadence could have real consequences.

I’ve pulled myself together since then and started eating much better. Gone are bags of candy and cookies. They’ve been replaced with much healthier options such as fruits, yogurt, and trail mix.

I’m writing this because I know it’s so easy to get caught up in our lives and whatever’s going on that we don’t even think about what we’re eating. I figured with my young age and relatively good health I could eat whatever I wanted with no issues. Now I know better.  And I’m feeling so much better too.

Here’s to a happy, healthy, and fit year :)
